1780's Dresses by Seitou 1780's Dresses by Seitou

Fashion Timeline: 1760-1810

Year: ca 1783-1787
Style: Georgian
Dresses: Robe à l’anglaise & chemise à la Reine
Description: 1) A dress in the English style. Unlike the robe à la française, which had pleats falling loosely down the back, the robe à l’anglaise was shaped and fitted through the torso both in the front and the back; 2) Loose, unfitted gown made popular by Marie Antoinette. This gown could be put on over the head; in the 1780s, it had a wide décolletage and was sashed at the waist (from "Galerie des Modes").

1780s dresses at last! People have been waiting to see me draw a chemise dress for a while, so I knew I'd better draw one for this project. Plus, it's an important dress style, so I didn't have much choice in the matter >O> Yes, that's based on the dress from Vigge-Lebrun's 1783 portrait of Marie Antoinette...

I still feel like I could've done a better job on these two (their faces look so weird >_< ), but angsting over it is kind of pointless... and I still have 4 more dresses to go >O>!!! I attempted an idienne pattern on the robe a l'anglaise, but I think I might have failed... because I've never drawn those types of patterns before >___>;;; And I'm not sure that it was a really wise decision on my part to make the sleeves of the chemise so sheer...

And I'm actually looking forward to the Directory and Empire dresses this time! Because those styles were very simple so I won't have to go nuts drawing so many patterns!

Just so you know, I think the yellow/green you used for the ruffle on the left dress looks a little weird with your other colors. It almost looks kind of pukey.

It's interesting to see historical fashion illustrations in such a clean and unique style as yours :) I love the hair and romantic dresses of this period. Lovely work!

This is a very nice style. They both are beautiful outfits but I like the one on the left the most. They have got some fancy hair-styles there!
