Fashion Timeline: 1760-1810

Year: ca 1800-1805
Style: Empire
Dress: Chemise dress
Description: A transparent, white, high-waisted dress similar to drapes of ancient Greek or Roman statues. It emphasized the natural form of the body (From Kyoto Costume Institute).

And here I thought I failed at '90s clothing. Correction: I fail at Empire clothing. Drawing high-waisted dresses feels so strange after all the other pictures I did for this project o___o;;; After this project, I highly doubt I'll ever draw Empire stuff ever again... The only thing I really like about this image is the shawl the character has draped over her arm. I should've put more time into the design of the dress itself, but I just had no clue what to do with it. It's like the more simplistic a dress is, the harder it is for me to draw XDDD;;

On the other hand... I drew a turban? XDD;; I told myself I'd draw at least one turban for this project because the turban headdresses just don't get enough attention.

Ignore the poorly drawn fan >___>

Edit: And I already know her nose looks odd. I couldn't think of how else to draw it >O>;;;

I love how you draw dresses! Your lineart is droolworthy, and in this case I think her nose looks fine.

Someday I will learn clean lineart...

XDD

The Empire style was the high-waisted style of dress women wore during the early 1800s. It was during Napoleon's reign, which was the "First French Empire."

Nah, her nose looks fine! ;) Even though you consider this dress more simlistic than the other, it still has tiny detail (such as the pattern on the dress) and the embroidery on the shawl. I really like her headress...in fact, like like the whole outfit. This early 1800's style is very pretty. (In fact, I love styles pretty much from late 1600's to 1920's) but I like this one in particular. Of course I must :+fav: this. Hmmm, I'm going to have to :+fav: a lot of your artwork again when I make my new gallery in late January 2009 (since I'm closing down my current one & want to make a new one featuring better artwork.) :)

Thank you :D Turban headdresses are fun ^^ I really wish they'd show up in films more often...

So you're going to completely close down your gallery and get a new one? Wow. Starting for scratch sounds like it'll be time-consuming.

Yep, I'm going to make new account. I've outgrown the username "Ayane Shinobi" and want a name that suits me well. :) My new gallery will have a more improved style of artwork (I mainly want to work on anatomy, backgrounds, and shading). My new account will be my original artwork (since my current gallery is more of fan art). I just feel like I need a fresh start. I agree with you that starting from scratch will be time consuming, but I feel it will be worth it.

Yeah, I don't like those dresses either. They only really look good on a few women, everyone else looks preggers...
It is a wonderful picture, though. The shawl, the fan, the patterns and color scheme (not to mention the girl herself) are all wonderfully done.

Are you kidding?! That's incredible, I simply love all dresses you draw. They're so detailed and look so natural.

Empire dresses are quite annoying. I think one of the reasons why is because they generally don't look too great on a real body. I mean, if you're really thin, it might work. But the dress in general is much too thin and straight. It makes one look like a rectangle, eliminating all curves.

I do love her expression. The smirk has a fitting touch of sarcasm drawn in it. Her eyes are almost bright, and her eyebrows raised in curiosity. Very well drawn.

Heheh... thank you :blushes: I always give myself a hard time whenever I have to draw high-waisted dresses >_<

The Empire style can look good... but just not on most people. You have to be like... starving-to-death-thin XDD;;; Otherwise, those dresses just make you look pregnant.

You're welcome. Just not part of your comfort-zone, huh?

Indeed, I can never figure out why those baby-doll shirts/dresses are in when they only look great on a select few.
