Artist's Comments

It's about time I got back to work on the Galerie des Modes series. I haven't done any plates since early May^^; Round two features my character from Flock of Ravens, Nell.

Plate V. This outfit is from the mid 1790s. For some reason, I decided that Nell just looked better in very late 18th century clothes. But I admit, I don't like the way this turned out at all. The dress is okay, but I screwed up with Nell's hair. I'm not used to all those tight ringlets and curls. Also, please ignore the poorly drawn fan >_>;;

Background was made from Print Master Gold graphics, which I manipulated with some of my own textures.

Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.

This is one of your simpler drawings. It's still nice though.

People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in,
their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

lol, yeah^^; I tried to dress it up a bit with the floral pattern on the bottom of the dress, but there isn't much you can do with 1790's clothing. Most of the dresses from the time period are even plainer than this.

ah, I see. That's a shame. For some reason, when I think of 1700s, I think of Marie Antoinette so extragance is the first thing that crosses my mind.

Yeah, that's how I used to think until I really started studying the time period. For the most part everything was really over-decorated and fancy until the mid/late 1780s when English fashions started to become really popular (and English styles were a lot plainer than the French styles). Most of this was because of the political turmoil in France. During the Terror in the 1790s, it was dangerous to be caught wearing "rich" clothing. But it's really a fascinating period with the way fashion changes so suddenly.

No apologies. No regrets.
